Powers (Sage)
♦ Biggest dork ever. At least, that's how Hank would describe his power. His brain works similarly to a super computer. In addition to possessing a perfect memory, he can process data much faster than even the fastest of computers. (He knows this for a fact, he was bored and tested his cognitive abilities one day.) Whatever he sees he remembers, whatever he remembers can be recalled in an instant with perfect clarity and analyzed with amazing speed and accuracy. He also uses this ability to quickly analyze dangerous situations, and catalogue every possible detail of his peers including behavioral patterns.
♦ Mudar. Able to sense the mutant potential in others. Right now Hank isn't aware that this is an actual power. He calls it his "mudar" and chalks it up to being part intuition and part nerd brain picking up on details that others don't. In the future Hank may be able to turn on the latent mutant abilities of others under the proper circumstances and advance the abilities of existing mutants.
♦ Muscle Memory. Underdeveloped. Due to his computer-like brain Hank could pick up on a variety of physical activities quickly like martial arts, sports, hot dance moves, you name it. However, due to his size and his intelligence Hank is usually benched from that kind of activity and not exactly recognizing his own potential he's gone along with it. When it comes to the life threatening stuff, Hank knows the principle behind what physically needs to be done, but has done little to actually put his ideas into practice.
♦ Telepathy. Undiscovered. Hank's never read anyone's thoughts before and he'd be a little freaked out if he ever found out that he could.
Biography
Hank can give you a day by day, hour by hour account of his life starting with the age of seven and three quarters. He can recall the exact temperature of Dunfee, Illinois at 7:34pm on October 12th, 1984. He can not only recall every book he's ever read or movie he's ever watched, but recite all of it perfectly word for word.
His father, Norton McCoy, worked as a scientist who specialized in storing nuclear waste near one of the largest power plants in the country. The family was financially well off and Hank was an only child. Though he did not want for anything materially, his relationship with his father was distant. Edna McCoy, Norton's wife, lived as a housewife. Though Hank could literally recall the hundreds of times his mother ever baked him cookies or packed him lunches for school, he is aware that his mother lived in fear of him.
Hank rarely misbehaved, but his peculiar nature disturbed not only his parents but also teachers and peers. His uncharted intellect and insatiable curiosity combined with lacking social skills and a penchant for staring made him as endearing as The Omen's Damien Thorn. Over time, recognizing his loneliness and having frequently been the target of not just bullies but most of his peers, Hank would slowly learn how to interact with others in a less off-putting way.
It started with football.
In Junior High when size and skill mattered less than giving everyone a turn to play, Hank joined the football team. With sports he learned how to be a kid. During after school practice and games, intelligence was less of a focus and while the young McCoy was good athlete, he didn't outperform the others by leaps and bounds. It wasn't acceptance, but something close to it. Playing sports, Hank felt normal.
Despite his attempts to get along peacefully with others, as the term mutant became more widely known, his life at school became steadily more hostile. Xavier approached the McCoy's who gladly sent their only child away to a school for gifted youngsters. Hank realized that others liked him much more when he kept them at arms length and calculated his social interaction down to the number of words spoken and minutes spent.
After completing his high school education at Xavier's school, Hank was accepted at NYU where he completed his undergraduate, graduate and medical degrees, specializing in biochemistry and genetics. Though young, he is considered an up and coming world authority on both subjects which has also made him something of a public target by both those with pro-mutant and anti-mutant agendas. In the days before the school moved to Salem, Hank taught Mathematics and Science to the younger students. Due to his current research position at NYU he did not move to Salem Academy to teach.
In addition to his academic activities it was Hank who, under the direction of Xavier, worked on a number of modifications for the Danger Room, the Black Bird, in addition to being a stand-by co-pilot should one of the Summers brothers become unavailable. When available, he also helps Jean in the medical bay. In rare situations when Hank actually has free time, he enjoys correcting factual errors on Wikipedia.
Personality
Most people would describe Hank as "immensely likable" and awkwardly shy. The few that have worked with him on a regular basis recognize that he isn't shy as much as reserved and emotionally disconnected, calculating social interaction to an exact science preventing real personal connection from ever developing.
Easily faulted for childlike gullibility, Hank has remained closeted in his own world of research. He tries very strongly to convince himself that as long as he has his work everything will be fine. He hates confrontation and fighting, preferring well practiced tactics of passive avoidance instead.
Hank is kind not because he aspires to do right, but because he dreads doing wrong. He's constantly weighed and analyzed his motivations and emotions since childhood. The years have given Hank a one-track mind from his love of science to his inability to show interest in anyone else of the opposite sex when actively harboring a crush.
Strengths
Loyal, good natured and handy as a walking library.
Weaknesses
Obsessive, distant and dismissive of his own potential.
Appearance
At first sight, his appearance is as friendly and non-threatening with his lean stature, warm brown eyes, boyish good looks and a wardrobe slightly reminiscent of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.
Hank is both immaculately neat and disheveled. His mousey brown hair is kept combed but is inevitably moppy without gobs of hair gel, a step Hank frequently neglects in his morning routine. He dresses frequently in black but almost always in button up shirts and slacks, sometimes sporting a tie or wearing a cardigan instead. When not wearing loafers, Hank is a big fan of converse sneakers.
